Stick fighting is one of the oldest and most versatile methods of self-defense. A stick is a genuinely practical tool effective at close and medium range, against a single attacker or several, and it can also be used to defend against a knife.

Why Train With a Stick

Once you’ve learned the fundamentals of stick fighting, defending yourself against a single attacker becomes significantly more manageable. With continued practice, the same skills extend to handling multiple attackers. The stick itself is equally effective regardless of the size or strength of the person using it what matters is training, not physical advantage.

Choosing a Training Stick

A suitable training stick is roughly the thickness of your thumb, straight or slightly curved, and between 70–120 cm long depending on your height. Hazel is a good choice for training, as its relative softness reduces the risk of serious injury during practice though bruises are still part of the process. More experienced practitioners sometimes train with denser woods like ash, oak, or dogwood, which behave differently on impact and require more careful, controlled practice as a result.

Training Format

This is full-contact training, which means sticks take real wear and occasionally break during intensive sessions a normal part of consistent practice. Training covers not only stick technique, but body mechanics, psychological preparation, and stress management under pressure skills that carry over directly to real self-defense situations.
